I've written about The Biggest Loser before, I am after all the show's number one fan. My husband and I watch it together every Tuesday night. One thing I'm sure of is at some point during the show I will cry, and my husband will tease me for it. There is something about seeing people achieve their goals, or just plain trying hard that brings me to tears.
Those who tune-in for only a few minutes because they are turned-off by the grueling workouts the contestants endure at the hands of the in-your-face trainers Jillian Michaels and Bob Harper, are missing out. You need to watch a few full episodes to comprehend what The Biggest Loser is doing for people.
It's changing lives. It's saving lives. It's bringing families together and restoring confidence and self-esteem in people who have suffered with obesity their entire life. This show deserves more than just a few minutes of your time.
I hate to admit our Tuesday night ritual often began with a walk to the store where we would purchase a pie or donuts to eat while watching the show. I'm happy to say our ritual's changed. Watching the contestants exhibit such tremendous willpower and determination can't help but inspire you to do the same.
Neither my husband nor I are overweight. We work out regularly and yet we continue to tune in each week to see people sweat it out in the gym and face the ultimate weigh-in.
"Why?" Because you don't have to have weight to lose, to gain something from watching The Biggest Loser. The show is about much more than weight loss. It's about healthy living and setting goals. It's about facing fears and eliminating limitations we've placed on ourselves for reasons even we don't understand. It's about overcoming obstacles and it's about winning.
This week "Project Runway" mentors Tim Gunn and chic hairstylist Tabitha, treated each contestant to a complete Macy's makeover. With new hairstyles and clothing, they showed little resemblance to their former selves who arrived at the ranch weeks ago, under-confident and overweight.
But with each physical transformation gradually taking place, personal transformations are happening as well. These contestants are changed inside and out.
Whether or not you have weight to lose, a fear to conquer or an obstacle to overcome, The Biggest Loser can only inspire you in taking that first step in transforming your own life.
I may not have the weight to lose but there are changes I'd like to make in my life. I've been motivated to take the first step and every Tuesday night the contestants on The Biggest Loser remind me, there's nothing I can't do if I put my mind to it.
